1933 Chrysler Royal 8 Coupe

THE STORY

As aficionados of classic cars already know, coupes like this 1933 Chrysler Royal 8 do not become available often. This one, a recipient of both an AACA National first prize and Gold Jubilee Award, is a two-door, trunk-equipped model and one of very few known to still exist today. Of course, one reason for that was this year was during the height of the Great Depression and buying an expensive personal coupe was not always practical. Moreover, changes made its new CT platform a single-season model release as the factory moved styling over onto Airflow principles for 1934. The result means this became the final year of perhaps Chrysler’s most regal stylings, classic designs many well-heeled owners had taken such pride in.

The Royal Series CT was all new, a model platform that came with the brand’s newer L-head inline 8-cylinder Chrysler engine. Based on solid engineering principles, this 273 CI powerplant featured things like Floating Power engine mounting and Stromberg downdraft carburetion, and Chrysler’s then-new “silent-running” 3speed helical-cutgear manual transmission was behind it. Appropriately, this Royal 8 is powered by a 273 CI inline-8 and 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and Lockhead hydraulic brakes behind all four wheels helped slow this large car down.

The body, riding on a 120-inch wheelbase, was designed by the Budd Corporation, the Philadelphia-based coachbuilder who was then in the process of developing pioneer streamlined rail equipment as well. Beyond its stellar tan and green paint with its orange highlights, external features range from the door-style hood vents to the split windshield, chrome trumpet horns, the raked V-type radiator and the suicide-hinged, forward-opening doors between the sweeping Budd “rust-proof” fenders, only adding to its attraction. The interior is covered in posh brown leather and equipped with dual sun visors, leather door panels with wood-grain upper trim, a centered Art Deco-styled dash cluster and a floor-mounted shifter. There are spare wheels in chrome housings mounted to both front fenders, and this car rides on wire-spoked wheels with wide whitewall tires. From a year that indeed proved to be the end of Chrysler’s most stylish era for many, this special coupe is certain to be treasured.
