Regarded as one of the all-time great sports cars, the Shelby Cobra succeeded in capturing the hearts of enthusiasts by being dominant on the race track. When the 289 Cobra couldn’t be made any faster, Shelby decided to give the car a larger engine, and the infamous “427 Cobra” was born. The 427 Cobras featured a thick and larger chassis and slightly modified body, all the while keeping the original 289 doors, windscreen, hood and trunk lid.
Of the 260 original 427 street Cobras produced, approximately 105 examples left the factory with the less desirable and less powerful 428 Police Interceptor engines, leaving just 155 true 427 Cobras. Of the 155, only 100 were built with factory dual Holley carburetors. Only these dual-quad cars had their engines, transmission and expansion tanks painted black, a much more desirable combination than the other 160 street Cobras born with single carburetors and blue drivetrains. From that number, deduct the large number that have had their engines replaced or have been crashed, salvaged or simply destroyed, and there just aren’t a lot of truly pure 427 Street Cobras in the world today. It is estimated that only 15% of 427 street Cobras have both never had any competition features added and never had road accident damage. Of those unmodified/undamaged cars remaining, very few still retain their original drivetrains like this car here.
This 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 is one of only 155 true 427-powered examples that have impeccable history. It is presented here as having recently undergone a restoration and is ready to be shown or driven on tours around the world.
As the last car of the initial order for 100 street 427 Cobras, this example was billed by AC Cars to Shelby American on 10/27/65 and was shipped to Los Angeles. Once completed by Shelby American, it was billed to Richardson Ford Sales in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the invoice reading, “1966 Cobra – Red/Black, $6,088.00 plus freight, $95, total: $6,183.00.
Throughout its documented history, this incredible 427 Cobra has had just a few caretakers in its lifetime and accumulated only a mere 18,000 miles. In addition, its original aluminum skin has never been modified and still retains all of its original body, original chassis and original footboxes. It has never had a roll bar installed, never had a hole cut in the hood for a scoop and has never been fitted with side exhaust. Making this Cobra even more special, it retains its original 2x4v 427 CI engine, its original 4-speed Toploader transmission and its original rear end.
Starting with such a low mileage, untouched example, the restoration process was made much easier. The Cobra was completely disassembled and the body was stripped down to bare aluminum and refinished exactly how it left the factory. The Cobra is accompanied by photo documentation of the process. Today, it is presented in fantastic condition and ready to be shown at any prestigious concours around the world. The car comes with a correct grease gun, jack, side windows, soft top, tool roll and 427 owner’s manual.
Examples like this 427 Cobra are extremely hard to come by, and it’s virtually unprecedented to find an original and never-modified Cobra complete with its original drivetrain. This Cobra would be hard to replicate and is indeed an opportunity to buy an outstanding example, marking an excellent opportunity for the astute collector wanting no compromises.
