THE STORY

Some of the most valuable and collectible automobiles today are those that featured prominently in major motion pictures—everything from James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 in “Goldfinger” to the Mustang Fastback that Steve McQueen drove in the movie “Bullitt.” This 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback is a no-expense-spared custom built to replicate McQueen’s famous Bullitt Mustang.

The iconic 1968 film “Bullitt” featured what most experts consider to be the first modern-day car chase scene, one that was executed with such innovation and finesse that it became the standard for all that followed. Longer, faster and more action packed than anything before it, the 10-minute car chase scene was the first to use cameras in a way that put the audience right inside the cars and alongside the actors. The two Highland Green 1968 Mustang fastbacks used in the scene both featured the GT package and 390 CI V-8. As McQueen considered the car itself to be a character, not just another prop, he was particular about the look and feel of the car, having the emblems and back-up lights removed and adding gray Torq Thrust wheels to make the car look a bit meaner, more befitting of his character, Lt. Frank Bullitt. The Mustang’s grille was blacked out, and the paint was scuffed to give it more of an authentic, road-tested look.

This custom rotisserie build started life as a 1967 Ford Mustang GT finished in Highland Green over a black interior. Lurking under the hood is a new, fuel-injected 5.0L Coyote V8 engine that pumps out 460 HP and 420 lb-ft of torque through its Tremec 6-speed manual transmission with a hydraulically actuated clutch. Putting that power to the ground and controlling it is the responsibility of a 3-link suspension system with tubular front control arms and RideTech adjustable coilover shocks that works in concert with power rack-and-pinion steering. Power to stop this speeding Bullitt comes from a 4-wheel Wilwood disc brake system.

Inside, the beautifully finished black interior features bucket seats, a three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, air conditioning and a Kenwood stereo system with SiriusXM/Pandora/Spotify capability. Other notable details include American Racing Torq Thrust D wheels and a custom, hand-fabricated 3-inch exhaust system.
