THE STORY

Built at the Metuchen, New Jersey, assembly plant on June 4, 1968 and shipped new to Courtesy Motors Inc. in Littleton, Colorado, this exceedingly rare 1968 Shelby GT500KR is one of just two finished with special-order Code WT5107 Special Light Orange paint and equipped with a 4-speed, and the only one located in the United States; the other was shipped to England reportedly for promotional duties and remains there to this day.

Shelby No. 03397, this car’s R-code designation denotes the most important development in the 1968 Shelby GT model year: the early April introduction of the new 428 CI Cobra Jet Ram Air V-8 engine that prompted Shelby to add the “King of the Road” designation to the GT500. Significantly, this one-of-two GT500KR Fastback coupe retains its original drivetrain comprising the aforementioned Cobra Jet engine with smog equipment intact, a 4–speed manual transmission and a 3.50:1 Traction Lok rear end.

In addition to the power steering and power front discs brakes of the GT Equipment Group, the car offers the black Deluxe Mustang interior with knitted vinyl luxury bucket seats, a center console, wood-grain accents, shoulder harnesses, a Sport Deck rear seat, tilt-away steering wheel and an AM radio. Documented with a listing in the Shelby Registry, a copy of the Shelby invoice and a Marti Report, this unique GT500KR is retrofitted with BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires on Shelby 10-spoke aluminum wheels; the restored original wheel covers are included along with an original and highly desirable Orange Shelby jacket.
