As Rolls-Royce faced a new future under the ownership of BMW it also returned to its very earliest roots, devoting all of its resources to producing a single model on which its entire reputation would depend. Benefiting from four years in development and being the first all-new Rolls-Royce in nearly 40 years, the Phantom that emerged in 2003 from the plant at the famous Goodwood motor circuit was once again a defining statement in luxury, sophistication and craftsmanship, just as the first legendary Rolls-Royce to bear the Phantom moniker had been in 1925.
The 21st century Phantom’s BMW-designed all-aluminum 6.75L V-12 powerplant was effortlessly smooth and prodigiously powerful, generating 453 HP with a massive 531 lb-ft of torque. On the road that translated into a 150 MPH top speed with 60 MPH coming up in 5.7 seconds; perhaps more importantly, at 100 MPH, the power-reserve gauge that replaces the rev counter tells you that around 90% of the power remains untapped. Handling that power is a 6-speed automatic transmission, traction control and all-round ventilated disc brakes with ABS.
Riding on an aluminum spaceframe chassis platform with most body panels also in aluminum, each Phantom was hand-finished with paint, leather interior and wood accents crafted to each owner’s individual specification; in this case, the black exterior is complemented with a black leather interior and burl walnut veneers. As a 2010 car, this Phantom benefits from the 2009 model-year revisions, including the more harmonized front end with shallower grille integrated into the front bumper.
As evidenced by the original window sticker, this added up to a 2010 MSRP of $420,000, not to mention the $12,000 for the optional 24-inch Rolls-Royce wheels and tires on this highly specified example with paint-protection film, a sunroof, rear lounge seating with picnic tables and entertainment screens, a 15-speaker sound system and even twin umbrellas. In addition to being just one of 537 Phantoms built in 2010, another thing that sets this example apart is the modest odometer reading of just 5,269 miles, and the Phantom is accompanied by dealer service records.
Among the press plaudits the Phantom received, one reviewer noted, “Little else can touch it for that feel-good factor and little goes about its duties in the same prestigious and refined fashion.” Even today, few would argue with that.
